We are pleased to bring you Indigenising Curriculum at The University of Queensland: A Handbook. The Handbook includes chapters by Indigenous and non-Indigenous staff across The University of Queensland (UQ) and is framed by the Indigenising Curriculum Design Principles developed in consultation with the Indigenising Curriculum Working Party (Bunda, 2022). The Handbook explores the pedagogies, processes, benefits and challenges of Indigenising the curriculum at UQ. The mode of a UQ Pressbook for this edited collection was purposeful, as it enables new authors to potentially contribute to the Handbook in the future.
This publication is significant because, while important developments have been undertaken to advance Indigenising the curriculum across many disciplinary areas, few resources document this work at UQ. The Handbook provides an important published record of the work being undertaken at UQ. As an educational resource, we hope it will be useful for non-Indigenous staff who are motivated to Indigenise the curriculum in their discipline but are unsure where to start. It provides tips on beginning to Indigenise the curriculum and reflective questions for the reader to consider. The Handbook will also be of interest to students studying across the disciplines, as well as people working with and for Indigenous people generally. More information about each chapter is detailed in the introduction.
We are grateful to all the authors for their significant contributions to this Handbook. We also thank the reviewers for their thoughtful feedback to improve the chapters. Thanks also to the UQ Library for their financial support, and particularly Thomas Palmer and Marianne Sato for their advice and assistance in producing this Pressbook. Michelle James provided copyediting expertise. The Office of the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Indigenous Engagement) at The University of Queensland provided a supportive environment to undertake this project. We hope you enjoy this Handbook and that it contributes to assisting others to further Indigenise university curricula.
