Case example: Kieran

Let’s go back to Kieran’s case from the previous chapter.

Now that the physiotherapist has assessed his educational needs in a brief way, the physiotherapist is now delivering patient education in a way that is a priority for his first consultation.

Key skills to note in the video:

  • Giving the patient an outline
  • Asking what the patient knows so that information can be targeted
  • Giving him reassurance with REASONING (back is moving well, the symptoms, what the Dr has said)
  • Asking about concerns, especially with important tasks like returning to work
  • Outlining expectations for recovery
  • Answering the patient’s questions with thorough answers
  • Outlining key takeaway messages of what someone with acute LBP needs to know
  • Really clear and specific strategies
  • Outlining what will be covered at the next consultation (return to the gym)
  • Writing key points down for the patient.
