Case example: Kieran
Let’s go back to Kieran’s case from the previous chapter.
Now that the physiotherapist has assessed his educational needs in a brief way, the physiotherapist is now delivering patient education in a way that is a priority for his first consultation.
Key skills to note in the video:
- Giving the patient an outline
- Asking what the patient knows so that information can be targeted
- Giving him reassurance with REASONING (back is moving well, the symptoms, what the Dr has said)
- Asking about concerns, especially with important tasks like returning to work
- Outlining expectations for recovery
- Answering the patient’s questions with thorough answers
- Outlining key takeaway messages of what someone with acute LBP needs to know
- Really clear and specific strategies
- Outlining what will be covered at the next consultation (return to the gym)
- Writing key points down for the patient.
