Why is evaluation an important step in patient education?
Evaluating patient education is essential for several reasons:
- It allows us to actively check for understanding. Evaluation ensures that patients correctly interpret the information and do not leave with misunderstandings.
- It helps identify any gaps in learning. Recognising areas where patients need further clarification allows for targeted reinforcement.
- It allows us to reinforce key messages by providing opportunities to see where information or skills need to be reinforced or revisited. This can help the patient retain and apply what they have learned.
- It encourages dialogue. Checking in with patients provides a supportive opportunity to correct misunderstandings and opens the door for further discussion.
