Part three: Communication skills for effective patient education

Effective communication is the cornerstone of patient education and a fundamental part of physiotherapy practice. The ability to convey complex information in an accessible and meaningful way is a challenging skill, but one that can be effectively practiced and improved upon. Effective communication goes well beyond simply transmitting information. It can foster patient engagement, help with shared decision-making, and boost patient self-efficacy, ultimately shaping the therapeutic alliance we build with our patient. Without strong communication skills, even the most evidence-based interventions may fail to achieve the impact we need.

This section explores the essential communication strategies that underpin patient education in physiotherapy. By developing these skills, you will be better equipped to translate clinical knowledge into practical, patient-centred guidance.

Consider this scenario: You’ve just completed a thorough assessment of a patient with a chronic condition and developed what you believe is an excellent treatment plan. However, if you can’t effectively communicate this plan to the patient, even the most scientifically sound intervention may fail.

This chapter will help you bridge the gap between clinical knowledge and patient understanding.
