Student IT support

We provide essential IT facilities to help you succeed. These resources are designed to enhance your academic journey from being able to borrow laptops to accessing printers around campus, software access and technical support. This guide will help you navigate and make the most of the IT support we provide to our students.

Accessing the internet

Need to get online as a student who is currently enrolled? Here is how you can access the internet and a secure VPN, making it easy to access our resources and stay connected from anywhere on campus or from home.

Note: If you are under the age of 18, you will need a parent or guardian to complete the Application for Internet access permission form.

Sign in to UQ Authenticate with your UQ username (e.g. s1234567) and password. This includes all the devices that you access on campus.

WiFi

As a student, you have two options to access WiFi on campus.

UQ

During your first time configuring the UQ Wifi connection, you will have to Accept the Certificate ‘uq.edu.au’ to continue with the connection.

UQ WiFi is the default wireless network for all University of Queensland campuses.

Your login details should be:

Username: Your UQ username (e.g. s1234567)

Password: Your UQ password

Here is a detailed guide to Connect your device to UQ WiFi.

Eduroam

What’s eduroam you ask?

It is a secure network deployed at numerous universities and research institutions worldwide. You may require a virtual private network in some locations such as the Toowoomba and Rockhampton hospitals.

Your login details should be:

Username:  Your UQ account username in the format username@uq.edu.au. For example, s1234567@uq.edu.au

Password: Your UQ password

Here is a detailed guide to Configure your device for eduroam.

Don’t forget to Accept the Certificate

During your first time configuring your Wifi connection, you will have to Accept the Certificate ‘uq.edu.au’ OR ‘eduroam.uq.edu.au’ to continue with the connection.

Virtual private network (VPN)

The VPN acts as a ‘secure tunnel’ from your computer to the UQ network. Once connected, your computer will behave as if it is on the UQ network.

If you’re off campus and have a stable internet connection, you can use the VPN to access certain UQ resources.

For a detailed guide, visit VPN (virtual private network).

Borrowing laptops

Are you looking to borrow a laptop? Students enrolled in the current semester can borrow a laptop from the Library using their student ID card. For detailed information, visit Laptop loans.

Loan conditions

  • You must be enrolled for the current semester. If you unenrol, you must return the laptop to the Library. Your enrolment status may be checked periodically.
  • Your laptop loan must be returned to the AskUs service point where it was borrowed during service hours to be checked back in.

Software access

Our computers and loan laptops provide access to a range of software such as Microsoft 365 apps. Additional software can be installed via ZenWorks:

  1. Open the ZENworks application.
  2. Locate the software by selecting a folder.
  3. Double click the software title to open it.

UQ Digital Workspace (UQDW)

You can also get access to the software you need via the UQ Digital Workspace (UQDW). Approved students can request access to software applications or full desktop environments using any device from any location with an internet connection.

The UQ Digital Workspace page explains how to:

  • request access to existing software
  • request software to be added
  • use UQDW once you have been granted access.

View the list of software currently available on UQDW.

After you have been granted access to UQDW, you will be able to access the software via an installed virtual application or desktop or via a web browser.

UQ Digital Workspace is available on our workstations and loan laptops via the Zenworks application.

There are printers in most of our locations. You can print, scan or copy. You must use your student ID card or UQ login to access these printers and pay for printing. They are linked to your print account.
