PHRM4071 QUM Research-Focused Placement
Purpose and Overview
The Quality Use of Medicine (QUM) Research-Focused Placement provides students with the opportunity to investigate a specific QUM issue within a professional workplace. During this placement, you will balance practical site experience with the execution of a formal research project.
Pre-Placement Requirements
Before commencing your placement, you must complete the following preparatory steps:
- Attend the Course Lecture: Participate in the live lecture or watch the recording regarding course expectations and assessment requirements.
- Complete the Research Module: Finish the online learning module, which provides a comprehensive introduction to pharmacy research. This module covers:
- Developing your research question;
- Performing a literature review;
- Writing research objectives;
- Developing the research methodology; and
- Data analysis and interpretation of results.
Attendance and Scheduling
Your placement follows a strict full-time structure with room for negotiated flexibility:
- Duration: The placement runs for six consecutive weeks, beginning two weeks prior to the start of the semester.
- Weekly Commitment: You must attend your site on a full-time basis, defined as four days per week.
- Initial Contact: You are required to contact your supervisor four weeks before the start date to discuss your schedule.
- Discretion: Specific attendance days are determined at the discretion of the placement supervisor.
- Library Days: You may negotiate “Library Days” with your preceptor if the project requires off-site research or if on-site supervision is limited.
- Library days are not a right; they must be approved by your preceptor.
- The School recommends a maximum of two library days per placement.
Entrustable Professional Activities (EPAs)
Students are required to complete a minimum of two EPAs during the placement period. Your choice of EPAs depends on your individual learning goals and your specific workplace environment:
- Clinical Settings (e.g., Hospitals): Choose from a variety of clinical and non-clinical EPAs based on your current experience level.
- Non-Clinical Settings: Focus on non-patient-facing EPAs, specifically “Data Collection and Management” and “Teamwork and Collaboration.”
- Queensland Health (QH) Sites: Students placed at QH facilities are encouraged to use the specific QH resources and EPAs available via the Blackboard course links.
