What to Understand and Do Before Your Placement

Before starting your placement, you need to read, understand, and complete the following:

  • Visit the pharmacy in person to request a placement. Do not call to request a placement.
  • Submit your placement site and preceptor details through InPlace.

General Placement Rules

  • Students cannot be paid for placement work.
  • You cannot complete a placement at your usual place of employment.
  • You must not attend more than one placement at the same placement site – community pharmacy or hospital.
  • Students must not be supervised by relatives, or complete placements at sites owned or managed by relatives.
  • Community pharmacy placements must be completed in Australia.
  • Follow the recommended dress code and professional behaviour standards.
  • Do not start your placement until it has been approved by the School via InPlace. Placement Agreements are organised by the School.
  • Contact your preceptor at least two weeks before your placement to discuss expectations and schedule. For hospital placements, your preceptor may contact you instead.

Public Holidays and Alternative Hours

  • If your placement includes a public holiday, attend if:
    • The site is open and your preceptor is happy for you to do so. Confirm at least one week prior.
    • If the site is closed or supervision is unavailable, you do not need to attend.
  • For community pharmacies, if you want to make up hours, discuss this with your preceptor and notify your WIL Partnerships Coordinator.
  • Placements during university vacation times, weekends, or outside normal hours must be authorised by the WIL Partnerships Coordinator.

Placement Accessibility

  • If you need adjustments for your placement, make an appointment with UQ Student Services for a Student Access Plan (SAP).
  • It is your responsibility to communicate your SAP to the WIL Placement Coordinator.
