Dear Colleagues,

Welcome to the world of tourism!

This exciting field of research offers a safe and friendly environment in which to develop professionally and academically.

As in the real world, tourism exists to make us happy, and I hope that you will find happiness in this academic setting.

You are in good hands; we have women who are international influencers, as well as other references to come. It is a very friendly environment where you will find people willing to make your career interesting and exciting.

My advice is to always surround yourself with a team that values you. If you can’t find one in your immediate environment for whatever reason, you can look for networks with other colleagues who will support you and help you. I was fortunate enough to start my journey with a team (mostly female) who has always supported me. However, I have also found wonderful people at different Spanish and international universities who have supported, listened to and motivated me when I could not find that backing in my immediate environment.

Moreover, seek these references out not only for support in the academic sphere, but in the personal one too. They will understand your frustrations, bad days, joys and successes. I am grateful to all the women I have met, whether on my team, at my university, during my placements, at conferences or at other universities, because they have always offered words of encouragement and support.

Never trust the impostor syndrome. It seems to follow us wherever we go and whatever we do. The world is very competitive and sometimes hostile, but if you are where you are, it is for a reason.

Also, allow yourself to stop and breathe. Sometimes the pressure gets the better of us. Just take a walk, have a drink with friends or listen to music.

Thank you very much for wanting to be part of the tourism industry — we need women like you.
