114 Letter from Paula M. Aguilera-Vega
Dear colleagues:
I hope you are doing well. It is a pleasure to write this letter to you. My name is Paula Montserrat Aguilera Vega. A centennial early researcher born and raised in Mexico, my main topics in tourism are regional studies, regional development, and smart tourism.
My tourism journey was not something I had planned. I studied international business, and when I began my master’s thesis, one of my professors suggested that I explore a business tourism model. Unsatisfied with that direction, I started researching online to find ways to connect tourism with other variables, which led me to discover smart tourism. As I explored smart tourism, I focused on its direct relationship with regional competitiveness. I encourage you to pursue studies in tourism by incorporating new technologies or applying them to other industries to boost competitive destinations.
On the other hand, when we tell others that we are researchers, they often picture us sitting behind a computer (pretty accurate fact heheh); however, research also expands our perspective. The field is rich, involving serval types of tourism, and its relationship with other sciences. There are also various supporting elements and factors, such as government, sustainability, technology, and competitiveness, among others, that influence the industry. Doing research for the past three years of my life, and as an early-career researcher, I would like to share some advice that may be advantageous in this new era of tourism research.
Travel—travel! There is nothing more beautiful than a woman living her best life, whether alone or with companions. Engaging in these experiences makes us feel free and empowered. Take a break from your cellphone and truly enjoy the moment. Embrace the moment and allow yourself to be fully immersed in your surroundings. This connection to the world enriches personal experiences and enhances your research by providing first-hand insights that can lead to more meaningful contributions to the field.
Be kind to yourself. During my studies, while striving for “excellence,” I forgot about my mental health. Please remember to take time for yourself, cherish your loved ones, and practice self-love. Self-love is crucial for personal growth and happiness. By prioritizing your well-being, you can cultivate deeper connections with others and truly embrace the adventures life has to offer. Embrace the journey, and recognize that every experience, whether joyful or challenging, contributes to your growth. You’ll acquire the strength to pursue your passions and inspire those around you.
You are a woman, you are wise. My dear, embrace your true self and share your wisdom with others; that is the essence of science.
